MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF WARSAW

The recent years are characterized by a dynamic development of the Medical University of Warsaw (MUW), which is now the largest medical school in Poland. On 29th May 2000, the Senate resolution provided for the formation of a new Faculty, the Faculty of Health Sciences with three Divisions – Nursing, Midwifery and Nutrition. In 2002, the Faculty of Postgraduate Education was established.




The MUW has over five thousand students and a staff of 1352 academic teachers, including 146 professors (61 full professors, 27 associate professors and 58 adjunct professors) and 581 lecturers. The Medical University of Warsaw offers degree courses in nine principal subject areas and in four specialities. Additionally, it provides post-graduate education (specialty training and refresher courses).

For many years the Medical University of Warsaw has collaborated in research with centres all over the world, including Germany, France, Sweden, the UK, the Netherlands and the USA. There are 16 formal agreements on scientific cooperation which involve exchange of research workers, joint research projects and publications. Research at the MUW is funded by grants from the the Polish Committee for Scientific Research (c. 150 projects annually) while other forms of external funding include the European Union research fund and financial support by other bodies. Many research projects are funded from the MUW’s own resources.

The MUW participates in European exchange programmes for students and research workers, such as the SOCRATES, ERASMUS and CEEPUS programmes. The University is also involved in four thematic ERASMUS networks aimed at supporting innovative approaches and improving the quality of academic education through the development of joint educational projects and methods of teaching in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, including the criteria of teaching quality evaluation.

The curriculum of the University consists of a 6-year course of study in medicine and comprises 2 preclinical and 4 clinical years.

Medical studies in English are available only for persons having other than Polish citizenship.

The 6-year program is offered to high school graduates. The program adopted to the UE standards offers over 5700 hours of learning in the scope of general medicine, pre-clinical and clinical courses.

The curriculum of the University consists of a 6-year course of study in medicine and comprises 2 preclinical and 4 clinical years.

The applicants are admitted on the basis of their results stated in the High School Diploma (the grading scale is required). A good grade in chemistry, biology and physics is required as there is no entrance examination to English Division of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine at the Medical University of Warsaw.

Good knowledge of both written and spoken English is a prerequisite for admission. The applicants whose native language is not English should provide a certificate (FCE, CAE, CPE, TOEFL) or any other documentation of reasonable proficiency in English.

If the documents are not written in English, they must be accompanied by translations (into English or Polish) certified by an approved institution (e.g. the issuing body or a sworn translator).

The applicants are expected to submit the following documents:

filled in affidavit of citizenship
Declaration (concerns only candidates from EU and EFTA)
High School Diploma (as described above)
School certification (if necessary)
English language certificate (as described above)
photocopy of the applicant’s passport
health certificate

All delivered documents should be originals or certified copies (i.e. originally sealed and signed by the eligible institution/person. Initially applicant may send photocopies of all documents including application fee money transfer copy, however official documents are required for verification.

The yearly costs of studies are as follows:

The application fee amounting to 100,00 EUR is to be paid when applying to school (respective receipt of payment must be submitted with other documents – concerns new students). Those who will be accepted and decide to start their studies will be obliged to pay admission fee in amount of 100,00 EUR.

Tuition fee for newcomers (first year student and transfers students): 10.000,00 EUR for 6-year program per one academic year and 13.000,00 EUR for 4-year program per one academic year.

The cost of books, supplies and miscellaneous expenses amounts to about 2.000,00 EUR.
Housing expenses and cost of living: 6.000,00 – 7.000,00 EUR.

The Medical University of Warsaw has at its disposal available rooms in the student’s dormitory for English Division students. Priority for the above mentioned dorm rooms is given to first-year students.
