Study schedule for USMLE Step 1

 Although USMLE is the most important exam of you career, it should approached as any other standardized exams.  Testing strategies are as important as your knowledge.  This schedule is a guideline and can be altered according your needs.  This schedule can be used for any of the exams.  Reviewing with a partner is also encouraged. 

3-month study plan:

            -3 months before the exam:

·        Kaplan Videos:  be an active as possible (see active learning).  Learn the major concepts

·        First read of Kaplan material.

·        Take NBME 1 don’t be discouraged by your score, Use NBME as a guide and focus on your weakest subjects.

-2 months before the exam:

·        Kaplan books second read and review notes from video.  Solidify your knowledge on concepts and learn details

·        USMLE World questions bank.

·        Learns test-taking strategies.

·        Refer to First Aid for Step 1

·        Take the NBME 3 at the end of your second read.  Use NBME as a guide and focus on your weakest subjects.  NBME 3 is more challenging then the first one.

-1 month before the exam:

·        First Aid Step 1:  rapid review 3 to 5 days.  It’s Hard but very beneficial.

·        USMLE World questions bank.

-2 weeks before the exam:

·        Take NBME 2.  Are you satisfied with your score?

o       Yes:  take exam on schedule date

o       NO:  you have two more weeks to focus on you weakness.
